In 2 Samuel 5:17 and 1 Chronicles 14:8, we read about the account of King David defeating the Philistines at the Valley of Rephaim. My favorite part about this account, however, is not the win itself, but David’s reliance on God in the face of a battle.
David hears of the planned raid and instead of jumping into immediate action, he first asks God what he should do. “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give the enemy into my hand?” The Lord responds with a “yes.”
David defeated them there and said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies like a breaking flood. Therefore the name of this place is called Baal-perazim.” The name means the “Lord of Bursting Through.”
When I face trials and adversity in my own life, I hope my first response is to ask God for guidance as I know He is the “God of Bursting Through.”
